Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to print a PopimsCode ShiningFlakes device with a standard code printer?

Yes. The only one difference is that the substrate must carry shining flakes.
Such flakes may be deposited with a layer of varnish or a coat of plaint containing flakes. They may also be included in the material itself of the product, packaging or document to be protected.

Is it possible to read a PopimsCode ShiningFlakes device with a standard code reader?

Yes. A PopimsCode is a standard barcode. The three differences are the following:
The string represented by the barcode contains a secret random string.
There is a specific "Marker" around the code which is used to determine the position of the camera towards the code.
There is an additional zone called the "Signature", which contains the shining flakes.

Is it possible to authenticate a PopimsCode ShiningFlakes device with a standard code reader?

No, because a standard code reader would not be able to interpret a PopimsCode, but a simplified PopimsCode Application (not verifying a 3D signature) can check the accuracy of the secret random string.
There is very little chance that someone would try to print a PopimsCode with a correct random string and a false signature, because anyone would be able to detect it is a faked code with a PopimsCode Application verifying a 3D Signature.

Who is licensed to use the patents?

The license is granted to all individuals using the PopimsCode Applications. This license is limited to applications that are approved by PopimsCode or PopimsCard.

What is the standard cooperation scheme of PopimsCode?

We allow third parties to use the technology through what we call an "Integrator Agreement", to protect products and documents against counterfeiting, theft or loss, smuggling, and other types of fraud.
Such agreements are quite similar to licensing agreements but of a different nature. The beneficiary is allowed to develop and market all kinds of serialization activities using the technology, but all codes that may be read by the general public must also be authenticated by the PopimsCode Application, and all communications between a smartphone application and an Authentication Server must transit by our Switchboards.

Why do you impose connecting through your Switchboards?

Switchboards guarantee that it is at each time the right Authentication Server which is called.
They are the best way to protect Authentication Servers against piracy, as Authentication Servers only answer to official Switchboards.
They also protect the anonymity of the Application users, by preventing Authentication Servers to collect the fingerprint of the smartphone or any other information enabling the user's identification.
Our Switchboards also enable us checking that our royalties have been paid by final clients and Integrators.
Les Switchboards do not collect nor keep any personal or confidential information, such as for example the Signatures of Authentication devices. For this reason, hackers would not find any interest in trying to hack them.

Do you really want to prohibit your end customers to know the identity of users of the Application?

We guarantee to all users that their anonymity will be protected if they want it, but this does not mean we forbid them to communicate their identity. In many cases, users will be happy to give their details or their geographic position to their preferred brands or business partners. The rule is that it must be their free choice.
When providing the user with the result of an authentication, a brand may propose a link to its web site, and in that case the relation between the user and the brand becomes direct, peer to peer, and any transaction may be organized between them.
A brand may also offer rewards to customers enabling the identification of counterfeiters, and in that case, the users will be happy to provide their details.

Do you grant exclusivities?

Yes, but only for the following categories:
Pharmaceuticals and medical or hospital consumables
Alcoholic beverages
Automotive and other means of terrestrial mobility’s components
Aerospace components
Low and high voltage power supply equipment
Product compliance certification markings
Product compliance with a religious norm (kosher, halal, etc.),markings
All kinds of pieces of art, whether unique or numbered produced marketed in limited series. and only in the case where we have good reasons to believe that the beneficiary will effectively gain the leadership of the relevant category of products or documents in the relevant geographic zone.
Exclusivities always give right to specific minimum royalties to be paid in advance, that can be deducted from future royalty payments. Such deductions can be made only inside the relevant category of products or documents and the relevant territory.

What is the duration of an exclusivity?

Exclusivities may last as long as the specific minimum royalties are paid, but they are re-discussed every 3 or 5 years maximum.

Are Integrators free to sign directly any agreements with final customers such as manufacturers, distributors, governments, etc.?

A final customer always signs two agreements: one with the Integrator, defining the type of services he requires, and the other one with PopimsCode allowing him to use the technology. However, the integrator has a mandate to sign the PopimsCode agreements with the final customer in the name of PopimsCode. This mandate also allows the Integrator to invoice and cash in the royalties in the name of PopimsCode.

May final clients be their own Integrator?

Yes. In that case, they sign with PopimsCode an Integrator agreement. They may operate their Authentication Servers internally or subcontract this operation to any third party of their choice.
PopimsCode is also committed to designate any third party chosen by a final client as an Integrator, for the purpose of rendering authentication services to the relevant client.

Are Integrators allowed to market their own authentication software?

Yes. They are allowed to design software which is specific to the PopimsCode technology, and also allowed to create PopimsCode Applications dedicated to some of their clients. Building new solutions is certainly a profitable activity, as many final clients and Integrators are not willing to design their own software.
The official PopimsCode Application will also comprise software modules designed by some Integrators, these software modules being automatically selected when the smartphone detects one of their authentication devices. This will enable some Integrators to build up very strong strategic positions on the world market.

What is the PopimsCard operation?

It consists is using the PopimsCode ShiningFlakes technology to deliver digital ID cards, to identify individuals and various entities. Its business model consists in allowing third parties to use the technology through what we call an "Registrar Agreement", to deliver digital ID cards and render identification services.
This operation also consists in providing services to the community of card holders. These services are delivered by "Partners" benefiting of specific "PopimsCard Partner Agreements".
This operation will be launched in 2017, and you can get more information by downloading the PopimsCard presentation.
